Mathieu Ahlersmeyer

Mathieu Ahlersmeyer was a German baritone who studied with Karl Niemann in Cologne and made his debut at Mönchengladbach in 1929. He sang at the Kroll Opera and the Hamburg Staatsoper before joining the Dresden Staatsoper in 1934, where he created the Barber in Die schweigsame Frau and, in 1944, Hieronymus Jobs in Haas's Die Hochzeit des Jobs. At the Berlin Staatsoper he created the title role of Egk's Peer Gynt in 1938. The Nazi regime's 1944 Gottbegnadeten list exempted him from military service. Bombed out in 1945, he returned to Hamburg, a member of its ensemble until 1962.
