Mathieu Ahlersmeyer

Mathieu Ahlersmeyer was a German baritone who studied with Karl Niemann in Cologne and made his stage debut at Mönchengladbach in 1929. He sang at the Kroll Opera in Berlin and the Hamburg Staatsoper before joining the Dresden Staatsoper in 1934, where he created the Barber in Die schweigsame Frau, and appeared at Covent Garden with the Dresden company in 1936. The Nazi regime named him to its 1944 Gottbegnadeten list of artists exempted from military service. Bombed out of Dresden in 1945, he returned to the Hamburg Staatsoper and continued performing there until his retirement in 1973.
