Peter Anders

Peter Anders was a German tenor who studied at the Berlin Academy of Music under Ernst Grenzebach and privately with Lula Mysz-Gmeiner, whose daughter he later married. He made his stage debut at Heidelberg in 1932 as Jacquino, and sang at Darmstadt, Cologne and Hanover before joining the Munich State Opera in 1938, where he created A Piedmontese in Strauss's Friedenstag that year. The Nazi regime prized him highly enough to exempt him from military service, a favour that cost him standing after the war. He moved into dramatic roles from 1949, and died in Hamburg in 1954, five days after a car accident.
