Polly Batic

Polly Batic, born Leopoldine Batic, was an Austrian mezzo-soprano who made her debut in 1929 at the Trier theatre and appeared at the Salzburg Festival through the 1930s, creating the Second Servant in the premiere of the revised Die ägyptische Helena there in 1933. She held engagements at Bernburg and Liegnitz during the war, joined the Vienna State Opera ensemble in 1948, and remained until her retirement in 1963, appearing as a guest at La Scala in 1950 and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in 1953. Her repertoire ran to character and supporting roles, among them Annina in Der Rosenkavalier, Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro and Margret in Wozzeck, and she created Frau Grubach in the 1953 premiere of Einem's Der Prozeß.
