Maria Cebotari

Maria Cebotari was an Austrian soprano, born in Chișinău while it was still part of the Russian Empire, who studied with Oskar Daniel in Berlin and made her stage debut at the Dresden Staatsoper in 1931 as Mimì. She remained at Dresden until 1936, creating Aminta in Die schweigsame Frau in 1935, before moving to the Berlin Staatsoper and, from 1946, the Vienna State Opera. A noted Mozart singer, she also appeared at Covent Garden and the Salzburg Festival, where she created Lucile in Gottfried von Einem's Dantons Tod in 1947. Made a Kammersängerin in 1934, she died in Vienna in 1949, not yet 40.
