Maria Cebotari
Birthplace: Chișinău, Bessarabia Governorate, Russian Empire (now Moldova)
Maria Cebotari was an Austrian soprano, born in Chișinău, who studied with Oskar Daniel in Berlin and made her debut at the Dresden Staatsoper in 1931 as Mimì. There she created Aminta in Die schweigsame Frau in 1935. Her principal contract moved to the Berlin Staatsoper in 1935–36, though she continued to appear at Dresden, creating Julia in Sutermeister's Romeo und Julia there in 1940. A guest in Vienna from 1936, she joined the Vienna State Opera in 1947, the year she created Lucile in von Einem's Dantons Tod at Salzburg. She died in Vienna in 1949, not yet 40.
