Emilio De Marchi
Birthplace: Voghera, Kingdom of Sardinia
An Italian tenor whose voice was discovered during his military service and trained afterwards. He made his debut at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan in 1886 as Alfredo, and sang thereafter at La Scala, Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, and across Spain and Argentina. Puccini chose him over the young Caruso to create Cavaradossi at the Teatro Costanzi in 1900, preferring the more experienced man. He is little remembered now, having left no commercial recordings unlike most of his contemporaries; a few fragments of his voice survive on cylinders recorded at the Met in 1903.
