Hans Duhan

Hans Duhan was an Austrian baritone remembered principally as the first singer to record Schubert's Winterreise and Die schöne Müllerin complete. Trained in piano, organ and singing at the Vienna Academy, he made his stage debut at Troppau and joined the Vienna State Opera in 1914, where his career, largely confined to Vienna and Salzburg, ran until 1940. At the 1916 premiere of the revised Ariadne auf Naxos he doubled as the Music Master and Harlequin. He was especially admired in Mozart and Lortzing, but overusing his light baritone in works such as Die Meistersinger led to vocal difficulties, and he turned to lieder and teaching, numbering the baritone Hermann Uhde among his pupils. In later years he also worked as a stage director, conductor and composer.
