Charles Duveyrier

1803–1866 · French

Birthplace: Paris, French Republic

Charles Duveyrier was a French dramatist and librettist, and a disciple and propagandist of Saint-Simonianism, the political, religious and social movement inspired by Henri de Saint-Simon. With Eugène Scribe he wrote Le duc d'Albe, a libretto set by Donizetti and left unfinished at his death. It went to Verdi and, with its action moved from Flanders to Sicily in 1282, was premiered as Les vêpres siciliennes at the Paris Opéra in 1855. He often wrote with his half-brother Mélesville, and was the father of the geographer Henri Duveyrier.
