Célestine Galli-Marié was born Marie-Célestine Marié de l'Isle, daughter of the singer Mécène Marié de l'Isle, who taught her; Galli came from her marriage to a sculptor. She made her debut at Strasbourg in 1859 and went to the Opéra-Comique, creating the title role of Thomas's Mignon before Bizet wrote Carmen for her, a part she played more frankly than the house liked. She sang the Italian premiere at Naples in 1879, and her return to the Opéra-Comique in 1883 was what finally made Carmen succeed in Paris. She sang her farewell in 1890.
