Josef Gostic

Josef Gostic, born Josip Gostič, was a Slovenian tenor who studied at the Ljubljana Conservatory and made his debut there in 1929. He became first tenor at the Zagreb Opera in 1937, and after guest appearances in Vienna, Prague, Berlin and Dresden, created Midas in the premiere of Strauss's Die Liebe der Danae at the Salzburg Festival in 1952, repeating the role at La Scala and the Paris Opéra the following year. His London debut came in 1953, in the title role of Gotovac's Ero the Joker, considered his greatest role, and he returned to Covent Garden in 1958 as Grigory in Boris Godunov.
