Carlo Gozzi
Birthplace: Venice, Republic of Venice
Carlo Gozzi was a Venetian count and dramatist, and champion of the commedia dell'arte against Goldoni's reforms. He served with the Venetian army in Dalmatia before turning to satire with the Accademia dei Granelleschi. From 1761 he wrote ten fiabe teatrali for Antonio Sacchi's troupe, fairy tales played with the commedia's masks, among them L'amore delle tre melarance, Il re cervo, Turandot and La donna serpente. Their lasting following was among the German Romantics, and opera came after: Wagner's Die Feen, Prokofiev's The Love for Three Oranges, the Turandot of Busoni and of Puccini, and Henze's König Hirsch.
