Hans Hotter
Birthplace: Offenbach am Main, Grand Duchy of Hesse
Hans Hotter was a German bass-baritone who studied philosophy, organ and voice with Matthäus Roemer in Munich, and made his stage debut at Troppau (Opava) in 1930. He joined the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, singing his first Wotan there in 1937 and remaining a member until 1972, and created the Commandant in Strauss's Friedenstag (1938) and Olivier in Capriccio (1942), both at their Munich premieres. War delayed his international career, but from his Covent Garden debut in 1947 he became the leading Wagnerian bass-baritone of his generation, above all as Wotan and Hans Sachs. He directed the Ring at Covent Garden from 1962 to 1964, and sang his last major stage role in 1972.
