Hermann Jadlowker

Hermann Jadlowker was a Latvian tenor who studied at the Vienna Conservatory with Joseph Gänsbacher and made his stage debut at Cologne in 1899. He moved through Stettin, Riga and Karlsruhe to an engagement at the Berlin Hofoper in 1909, and sang at the Metropolitan Opera from 1910 to 1912, creating the King's Son in Humperdinck's Königskinder opposite Geraldine Farrar. In 1912 Strauss chose him for Bacchus in the premiere of Ariadne auf Naxos at Stuttgart. A lyric tenor of unusual coloratura agility, he nonetheless took on heavier roles such as Florestan and Otello, which took their toll, and he left Berlin in 1921. He later became a cantor, serving Riga's synagogue from 1929, and emigrated to Palestine in 1938, teaching in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv until his death.
