Georg Maikl

Georg Maikl was an Austrian tenor who studied in Stuttgart and made his debut in 1899 at Mannheim as Tamino. In 1904 he joined the Hofoper (later the Vienna State Opera), remaining there for forty years and giving more than two thousand performances in around a hundred roles, including Don Ottavio at Salzburg in 1906 and a Dancing Master in the 1916 premiere of the revised Ariadne auf Naxos. He also sang several Vienna premieres: Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly (1907), the Italian Singer in Der Rosenkavalier (1911), Narraboth in Salome (1918), Victorin in Die tote Stadt (1921) and the Captain in Wozzeck (1930). A lyrical singer specialising in Mozart at first, he developed into a fine character tenor.
