Jules Mermand
also Mermant, Édouard Jules Mermand
Birthplace: Saint-Priest, Kingdom of France
Jules Mermand was a tenor from Saint-Priest, near Lyon, who sang at Ghent in 1860 and at the Théâtre-Lyrique in 1863 before his debut at the Paris Opéra, in Moïse in 1864. Having tried the leading tenor parts in the provinces, he settled for what Le Ménestrel called the modest place of coryphée tenor, and held it for twenty years. He created the royal herald in Don Carlos, a gravedigger in Hamlet, a rajah in Massenet's Le roi de Lahore in 1877 and the Alcalde in Gounod's Le tribut de Zamora in 1881.
