Osip Petrov sang in church choirs and provincial theatres, working at Poltava alongside the actor Mikhail Shchepkin, before joining the company at St Petersburg in 1830. He stayed nearly fifty years, and Russian opera was built around his voice: he created Susanin in Glinka's A Life for the Tsar and the title role of Ruslan and Lyudmila, Ivan the Terrible in Rimsky-Korsakov's The Maid of Pskov, and Varlaam in Boris Godunov at sixty-seven, thirty-seven years after Susanin. His jubilee in 1876 brought a gold medal from Alexander II.
