Giacomo Rota
Giacomo Rota was an Italian baritone who created Fra Melitone in the revised La forza del destino at La Scala in 1869. He made his debut at Cuneo in Ernani. Verdi doubted him and had Giulio Ricordi hear him first, in Rossini's Mosè, but afterwards counted his presence a guarantee for later performances. That season at La Scala he also sang Nevers in Les Huguenots and Don Sallustio in Marchetti's Ruy Blas; elsewhere he was Renato, Rodrigo in Don Carlo and, at Turin in 1879, Don Giovanni. He left the stage in 1880 and later sat on Trieste's city council.
