Marianela Sánchez is a Dominican light soprano, admired at home for the reach of her upper register and the precision of her intonation. She studied piano and voice at the National Conservatory with Rafael Sánchez Cestero and Olga Azar, then qualified as a teacher of voice at the Santa Cecilia conservatory in Rome. She sang with the National Choir, returned to the Dominican Republic in 1984, and took principal roles with the National Symphony Orchestra in Lucia di Lammermoor, Fidelio and Rigoletto. She created Gicua in Antonio Braga's 1492 epopea lirica d'America in 1992.
