Paul Schöffler

Paul Schöffler was a German baritone who trained in Dresden and made his stage debut there at the Semperoper in 1924, appearing in the local premieres of Busoni, Weill and Hindemith before establishing himself as a Mozart singer in 1926. He moved to the Vienna State Opera in 1939, remaining for 35 years and singing over 1,400 performances there, and created Jupiter in Richard Strauss's Die Liebe der Danae at its delayed 1952 Salzburg premiere. A regular at the Salzburg Festival and, from 1950, the Metropolitan Opera, he was especially admired as Wagner's Hans Sachs, and sang into his seventies.
