Gisela Staudigl

Gisela Staudigl was an Austrian mezzo-soprano who studied with Mathilde Marchesi and made her stage debut in Hamburg as Amneris in 1882. She joined the Karlsruhe court theatre in 1884 and married the bass Josef Staudigl the following year. In 1886 she became the first Bayreuth Brangäne, returning there through 1892, and toured with the Metropolitan Opera as Adriano in Rienzi and as Goldmark's Queen of Sheba, visiting Milwaukee, Boston and Cincinnati with the Damrosch Opera Company in the 1897-98 season. She created Walpurg in the premiere of Strauss's Feuersnot at Dresden in 1901, and at the court opera houses of Vienna, Munich and Berlin she was also successful as Orpheus, Fricka, Azucena, Waltraute and Venus.
