Birthplace: Hermannstadt, Transylvania, Austrian Empire (now Sibiu, Romania)
August Stoll was an Austrian tenor and stage director, the son of the Budapest tenor Peter Stoll. Meant for theology, he began in 1869 as a chorister and actor at Laibach, sang operetta at Bozen, Pressburg, Olmütz and Vienna, and from 1873 opera at Graz and Prague, where his Wilhelm Meister in Mignon made his name. In 1884 he settled in Vienna, first at the Theater an der Wien, then the Hofoper, where from 1885 he worked as a producer while still taking small parts. At sixty-three he created the Major-domo in the revised Ariadne auf Naxos in 1916.
