Fyodor Stravinsky came of a Polish noble family and was the father of Igor Stravinsky. He studied at the St Petersburg Conservatory and then with Camille Everardi in Kiev, where he began his career in 1873. From 1876 he was a principal bass at the Mariinsky Theatre, singing there until his death: 1,235 appearances in 64 roles, and hailed as the successor to Osip Petrov. He created three Tchaikovsky roles and King Frost in Rimsky-Korsakov's The Snow Maiden. A devotee of Shevchenko and a champion of Lysenko, he posed as a Cossack for Repin's Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks.
