Antonio Superchi

1816–1893 · Italian · baritone

Birthplace: Parma, Duchy of Parma

Antonio Superchi was an Italian baritone who created Don Carlo in Verdi's Ernani at La Fenice in 1844. Born in Parma to a wealthy family, he studied there with Antonio De Cesari and Luigi Tartagnini, and made his debut in Venice in 1836 as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor. He sang across Italy and at Palermo, where he created Ernesto Malcolm in Pacini's Maria, regina d'Inghilterra in 1843, then at Barcelona and at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, where The Times praised his firm notes. After leaving the stage he became inspector of Parma's Teatro Regio and taught singing there.
