Vladimir Vasilyev studied in St Petersburg and made his debut there in 1856, at the Bolshoy Theatre. In 1860 he was engaged at the Mariinsky, where he sang in the premiere of Serov's Rogneda in 1865 and created Pimen in Boris Godunov and Prince Zhemchuzhny in Tchaikovsky's Oprichnik, both in 1874, and the King in The Maid of Orléans in 1881. His repertory also included Ivan Susanin, Leporello and Bertram in Robert le diable. He retired in 1881.
