Pavel Zhuravlenko

Pavel Zhuravlenko was a Russian bass who created Varlaam at the 1928 Leningrad premiere of the original 1869 Boris Godunov, the Lamm edition, praised by Boris Asafyev for the richness of its Mussorgskian intonation. He began voice study at eighteen under Dolinov, then in Moscow under Antonin Sekar-Rozhanskii, and made his 1911 debut as Varsonofyev in Khovanshchina at Kazan. From 1912 he sang at the Petrograd Theatre of Musical Drama, then from 1918 to 1921 partnered Fyodor Chaliapin in Don Quixote, Boris Godunov and Prince Igor, and remained at the Mariinsky and Mikhailovsky theatres until his death.
