No date survives; stylistic similarity to Philoctetes (409 BC) and Oedipus at Colonus (401 BC) places it late in Sophocles's career. Hugo von Hofmannsthal's free 1903 play Elektra, the opera's own direct source, reworks it as a modern psychological drama.
