Written in French in 1891. Refused a licence for the English stage under the prohibition on depicting biblical figures, it was first published, in French, in Paris and London in February 1893, and did not reach the stage itself until 1896, in Paris. Hedwig Lachmann's German translation, abridged by Strauss himself, is the opera's direct source.
