Semperoper

Semper's second house for Dresden, opened on 2 February 1878, where Der Rosenkavalier was first given in 1911. It kept the name Königliches Opernhaus until 31 August 1919, some months after the Saxon king abdicated, and in between playbills either dropped the royal style or printed it struck through. Closed for the war on 31 August 1944 and gutted by bombing the following February, it stood in ruins for four decades; the rebuilding kept Semper's design on the same site, and the house reopened on 13 February 1985 under the name Semperoper, which it had never officially held before.
