Nationaltheater München

The Bavarian court's theatre on the Max-Joseph-Platz, opened on 12 October 1818 to Karl von Fischer's neo-classical design and burnt to its foundations during a performance on 14 January 1823, the water supply having frozen. Leo von Klenze rebuilt it on the same plan and it reopened on 2 January 1825. It was the Königliches Hof- und National-Theater until the Bavarian monarchy fell on 9 November 1918, and it was Klenze's house, by then simply the Nationaltheater, that gave the first Friedenstag in 1938 and the first Capriccio in 1942. Gutted by bombing on the night of 3 October 1943, it stood ruined for twenty years, and the rebuilding again followed Fischer's design, reopening on 21 November 1963 with Die Frau ohne Schatten. It is the largest opera house in Germany and the home of the Bayerische Staatsoper.
